Learn how to make your own Chain Maille jewellery.

Come to the studio to unlock the secrets of making chain maille on our latest one day workshop. This is a fascinating subject to study, one that is truly absorbing. It is a mystery when chain maille was first used as a protective garment during battle. This information has been swallowed up in history, but it is believed to originate from the 3rd Century BC, and invented by the Celts. There are numerous variations of the spelling, from chain mail to chain maille. The word ‘maille’ comes from the french word for mesh. Very apt as ‘mesh’ is a good description for this ancient craft. Fortunately for us, the actual techniques have survived and are thriving today as a wonderful, decorative art form. Great for jewellery making.

What will we do during the Chain Maille workshop?

This is a one day workshop to explore a few of the most commonly known and used weaves. We will start with simple chain construction, and gradually work up to something a little more difficult as the day progresses. A clear explanation will be laid out regarding wire and jump ring sizes. (Aspect Ratio)

You will be given advice on the tools you would need to practice the subject at home. And the opportunity to handle and purchase some tools from the studio shop should you wish. You will find that handling the tools before purchasing is essential when you are purchasing pliers. These are the main tools needed and they need to feel comfortable in your hands. This workshop is aimed at introducing the subject to you at a very simple and easy to understand level. You will be given step by step instructions and 1:1 help when you need it.

Who is the class for?

This Chain Maille class is suitable for absolutely anyone. You don’t need to have any previous jewellery making experience. So it doesn’t matter if you are a seasoned silver jeweller, a beader, a crafter or none of the above, you are welcome to come along.

What is included?

Materials are extra for this workshop. We are going to use a lot of jump rings during the class. These will be prepared for you and available to buy on the day. There is a selection of wires and beads to buy from the studio shop if you wish to stock up with supplies to continue with at home.

At lunch time

We are adjacent to the Chesterfield Canal where lunch may be purchased from the cafe or a pack up may be eaten at the picnic site. There is also a Morrisons supermarket close by with a cafe, cash point, etc. The studio is closed and locked over the lunch break and it is fine to leave any belongings if you wish.

  1. Rachael Fridlington, Dronfield, Sheffield

Brilliant day learning some intricate skills which developed quickly. Full on from start to finish and very theraputic

  2. Cath Johnstone, Chesterfield

Another enjoyable day learning something new. I got the hang of it OK but you can only admire the chain mailers doing armour. It is fiddly but rewarding and you can achieve an amazing array of designs.

  3. Louise Bullard, Sheffield

Interesting, though more intricate than I thought it would be. Once I got the hang of making the patterns I was very pleased with the results. Will definitely attempt more.

  4. Selina Maltby, Nottingham

Enjoyed learning the different types of weave. Will definitely do more of this at home. Very interesting workshop.

  5. Linda Brookes, Chesterfield

Brilliant class, learnt a lot, will be making various pieces based on what I have learnt.

  6. Julie-Anne Lewis, South Normanton, Alfreton

Fabulous ancient skill of chain maille made reasonably simple to master after several attempts. I made fabulous examples for trying in silver at home and Angie was very patient and helpful when things didn’t always go to plan.

  7. Alison Evans, Mansfield

Really enjoyed this class, have taken extra jump rings and wire to make a bracelet out of one of the weaves.

  8. Sam Hee, Chesterfield

A very interesting day, will be giving it a try at home.

  9. Natalie Wilson, Nottingham

Loved it! Looks hard but with very clear explanations was able to pick it up quickly. Will definitely be continuing this subject at home. Just enough content as some bits take time to get your head around – any more and you would struggle to concentrate and stay engaged. Really happy with what I created 🙂
