Who is this course for?
This is a short course, designed to give a taster for new starters to just try jewellery making and introduce silver jewellery making and silversmithing techniques at complete beginner’s level. The course is intended as a precursor to joining a weekly 8 week term time class. It includes tuition using most of the tools and equipment you are likely to use during non-directed classes. You will also touch on most of the basic skills making you ready to join a weekly term time class without feeling isolated or bewildered in the workshop.
During this course you will receive individual help and attention at each session. So if you attend for all 5 weeks of the course, you should be able to complete 4 or more wonderful pieces of handmade jewellery without any prior knowledge or experience.
This excellent introductory course will provide beginners with a starting point in the subject. All the basics of the subject will be looked at in brief over the 5 weeks. Including heating metals and soldering, cleaning metals, how to use cutting tools, forming, making findings and texturing. The course will focus on developing the basic skills of silver jewellery making, good studio habits, the correct use of tools and an in-depth knowledge of fabrication techniques. This course is also an induction in to the workshop health and safety practices.
You will make a mixture of silver and copper items. A basic selection of materials needed to make 4 projects is included in the price. All consumables like saw blades and drill bits are also included, along with the relevant silver solders.
After the Beginner’s Silver Jewellery Course:
You may carry on straight away on the same day and time as the 5 weeks. Just pay for an 8 week term and get stuck in. This introductory course is designed to introduce you to both the workshop and the subject; to enable you to join other studio classes to develop your skills further. After completing this 5 week course you will be able to attend any of the Silverpetal Specialist Classes.
The 8 week term studio time classes are non-directed open studio sessions to work on projects of your own choice, at your own pace. Please see Weekly jewellery making term time classes for more information regarding these sessions.
Pressed for time?
If you cannot attend on a weekly basis we offer a beginner’s taster option. This can either be a half day to make a silver ring, or a full taster day to make a ring and a pendant or earrings. We also offer 1:1 days tailored around your own schedule.
Want something a bit more focused?
There’s an option to do this course over a weekend on our 2 day intensive crash course. This workshop covers the same ground. It is a good option if you live too far away to attend weekly and would like to be able to work un-aided straight away in a home studio. This option is also a good refresher course if you have studied the subject a number of years ago and wish to start the craft again.
