Description
At Silverpetal Studio our Beginner’s Silver Jewellery class is held once a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Classes are available afternoons 2 until 4pm, or evenings from 7 until 9pm. ‘Choose an option’ above to check current availability. This is a tutor led class offering you plenty of 1:1 help throughout the course.
Who is this course for?
This is a short course, designed to give a taster for new starters to just try jewellery making and introduce silver jewellery making and silversmithing techniques at complete beginner’s level. The course is intended as a precursor to attending a weekly 8 week term time class. It includes tuition using most of the tools and equipment you are likely to use during non-directed classes. You will also touch on most of the basic skills making you ready to join the classes without feeling isolated or bewildered in the workshop.
During this course you will receive individual help and attention at each session. So if you attend for all 3 weeks of the course, you should be able to complete 3 wonderful pieces of handmade jewellery without any prior knowledge or experience.
Techniques covered:
This excellent introductory course will provide beginners with a starting point in the subject. All the basics of the subject will be looked at in brief over the 3 weeks. Including heating metals and soldering, cleaning metals, how to use cutting tools, forming, making findings and texturing. The course will focus on developing the basic skills of silver jewellery making, good studio habits, the correct use of tools and an in-depth knowledge of fabrication techniques. This course is also an induction in to the workshop health and safety practices.
What’s included:
The base metals to make 3 projects is included in the price. If you prefer, an up-grade to silver is an option, payable in cash at the first class or at checkout when booking. All consumables like saw blades and drill bits are also included, along with the relevant silver solders.
Private tuition
If you would prefer to attand alone due to recent Covid events, this course can be attended privately at a date to suit you. Please see our Private Classes page for further information.
After the Beginner’s Silver Jewellery Course:
You may carry on at the studio on completion of the 3 weeks. Just pay for an 8 week term and get stuck in. This introductory course is designed to introduce you to both the workshop and the subject; to enable you to join other studio classes to develop your skills further.
The 8 week term studio time classes are non-directed open studio sessions to work on projects of your own choice, at your own pace. Please see Weekly jewellery making term time classes for more information regarding these sessions.

Really enjoyed the easy atmosphere with lots of opportunity to ask questions. Enjoyed all aspects – made very welcome. I am pleased with all the pieces I have made and the techniques learnt.
Sarra Jenkins, Loughborough –
The pace was great and it was lovely to feel challenged but supported the entire course. I feel well versed to be able to have a go at some projects at home – but I am returning for another course. Simply brilliant – fun, informative, creative in a great studio with Ange’s expertise.
Liz Coleman, Nottingham –
Brilliant course. Good sized class, really enjoyed the ring project. I was amazed how quick it was to produce something. Loved the earrings too – will make some more silver ones in the weekly classes.
Julie Bingham, Alfreton –
The whole course was fantastic! I managed to make a ring in a couple of hours 🙂 When Angela showed us each process we went away and did that bit. Then we were shown the next stage – was really helpful as you didn’t have to remember lots of different new things. The small class size meant that help was on hand constantly. I have now joined the intermediate to advanced weekly workshops and I’m loving it. I’ve been able to join and get on almost un-aided without struggling. I have discovered a great new hobby at last.
Rachel Ottewell, Stainsby, Chesterfield –
I was extremely happy with what I produced throughout the course. I was able to create a lot more by myself than I was ever expecting. I felt we were always kept busy – so the course in turn has felt like really good value for money. I have now joined the weekly workshops and really enjoying working more on my own but with help if I need it.
Veronica Jones, Sheffield –
Great course – well run and everything explained clearly. Would recommend this course to family and friends. Very enjoyable.
Emily Pope, Sheffield –
Very friendly course. A wide variety of different things are covered and its explained well. I had lots of fun and learnt a lot of things and tips I couldn’t have worked out on my own. Much better than trying to learn off Utube! Highly recommended.
Helen Stables. Dronfield –
I Really enjoyed the course! Great content and I’m very pleased with the pieces produced. Lots of skills learned that I’m looking forward to using in the class. Thank you Angela! 🙂
Clare Babe, Barlborough –
I really loved the variety of items we could make. We went straight in to the practical experience which was great as you got to observe and then immediately try it yourself. I felt that it helped to retain the information and use it each week.
Anne, Nottingham –
What a wonderful way to spend an evening with a small group of people, learning several new skills. I have learnt lots and Angie has plenty of patience with us all. You have plenty of 1:1 coaching and help when needed. Great fun and learnt plenty – thanks
Nadine Haywood, Notts –
I enjoyed the whole course. Lots of different things to make and lots of different techniques. We made more than I thought we would. The instructions were lovely and clear and I loved the fact that everything was so organised. It was good to be in a small group. Had a great time, loved it – it just went far too fast.
Lindsay Parker, Chesterfield –
Great course – covered lots of stuff in five weeks. Really enjoyed it, Thank you
Leian Rogers, Clowne –
Really enjoyed the course. Angela made sure we all knew what we were doing and no-one missed out. Well paced for everyone to complete each week. Will be back for a term or more with the help from Angela I feel I will become better and better.
Megan Chivers, Ashover –
A well paced course that takes you step by step through the production of a range of different projects at a good speed. Using copper allows confidence to be gained before risking silver, which is good. Really enjoyable course with friendly and helpful tutor.
Walter Leatherday, Bolsover –
Very educational, re-learning what I thought I knew about soldering. Very relaxed atmosphere in small classes, so Angela has time for everyone. Some tricks like paper being able to imprint on metal – still can’t grasp that one, but it works and looks impressive.
Max Mcculloch, Dronfield –
There’s much more to making jewellery than I imagined. All interesting – all provoking further study and practice. A brilliant and fascinating starter course
Ian Smith, Retford –
Worked with both silver and copper. Demonstrations are good and the pace is fine.Nice to be able to ask questions and Angela is very knowledgeable about the subject. Equipment and layout is good and not cramped at all
Lou Powel, North Anston, Sheffield –
The course was great! Angela was really helpful and always on hand if I needed any help. I think there was enough content to the course but when someone had a query about a different piece of jewellery or technique Angela was more than happy to explain processes. A lot more than I was expecting and loved the layout of the classes. I will definitely be returning to the studio and hopefully build up the confidence to continue the subject at home. Thanks again.
Bev Whittaker, Dronfield –
I loved all aspects of the course and everything was explained fully.
Aileen –
Really enjoyed getting back to doing things properly. It was great to be with like minded people doing things we all enjoy – and because the class was small we were all able to get help when we needed it. Angie was able to go around us all, encouraging people when we ‘made a breakthrough’ with a technique. Will be carrying on with more training to learn the advanced technical side of silversmithing.
Sue Russell, Sheffield –
Really enjoyed all aspects of the course. Very relaxed but taught well.
Kelvin O’Connor –
Just what I needed to start.
