Stone setting is one of the most enjoyable aspects of jewellery making. With hundreds of different stones available it will always  give a special dimension to your work. This is a 9 page booklet looking at ‘claw’ or ‘prong’ setting. This is a way of making claws for setting faceted stones. Faceted stones have been cut to enhance their characteristics, the facets have been cut to direct light in to the stone to give the sparkle. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, and a variety of different colours. The design of a claw setting is to enhance these characteristics.

 advanced stone settingThis booklet shows you how to make 2 different types of claw setting and these 2 settings in this booklet can be adaptable to set most of the different shapes available. This way of setting stones is skilled entering the realms of the master jeweller.

Skill requirements

This is not a subject for beginners. You do need finite silver jewellery making skills to start with.

This includes soldering, working on a small scale and being able to work with accuracy and precision. Already being very competent at rub over cabochon and tube stone setting will be a definite advantage when tackling this type of setting.

Special tools needed;

To make claw settings you will need a basic jeweller’s kit. If you have reached this stage in your ability then you will be familiar with and have your own / or access to all the tools you will need. The additional essentials other than your basic kit are; a small scale soldering torch, a vice for setting rings, a sand-bag for setting pendants and a bezel pusher. This subject is more about your skill level than the tools. You may find a set of good needle files and medium sized diamond files helpful for finishing.

Materials you will need;

You will need normal silver or copper in the appropriate thicknesses for pendants / rings. The settings themselves are usually constructed from thin wire – 0.5mm and upwards. The settings you can make in this booklet can be adapted and scaled up to make much larger settings for bigger stones. This would need thicker wire – 1mm to 1.5mm. You will find solder paste is essential for the small scale soldering required for these types of settings.
